It doesn't matter what level you play -- everyone has felt (rightly or wrongly) that they have been on the short end of the stick when it comes to the performance of a line judge, second referee, or scorekeeper.
Why do work teams make mistakes? Certainly, some errors occur because of laziness or indifference and there isn't much anyone can do about that. But, the vast majority of situations arise from people simply not knowing what, when, or how to perform their role as LJ, R2, or scorekeeper.
Don't worry, Yankee is not going to require a complex certification policy of any kind. But, starting today anyone who wants to learn about the key responsibilities of each of those positions can simply hop up to the Yankee web site (look for the NERVA Work Team Accreditation page) or go directly to http://www.yankee.org/accred. Starting with scorekeeping and second refereeing, you will find brief tutorials about the most vital elements of each job. The tutorials were developed by New England Region Officials specifically for players during tournament play.

In fact, taking and passing the scorekeeper portion will meet the Yankee Championship requirement for a certified scorekeeper on your roster. Ditto the referee portion for the Yankee Championship requirement for a certified referee on your roster.

It's an easy matter of hopping on line, walking through a presentation at your own speed and taking a quick quiz of T/F and multiple choice questions. My guess is that it will take you 15 minutes for any presentation (even using a dial-up connection). If, by chance, the downloads take too long, you can get a non-graphic version by clicking on the "A" icon at the top of any of the slides.
Here's a quick sample of some of the material in these tutorials.
| As an R2, where should you focus when a team is attacking? (The
blocking side of the net)
| |
| Did you know: Player(s) entering substitution zone constitutes a legal
substitution request.
| |
| How to properly record substitutions on the scoresheet.
| |
| How to enter information in that darn Sanctions box at the bottom of
the scoresheet?
| |
| A LJ should never call touch when the ball goes out of bounds off the
blocker on the hitter's side of the net. (Simply signal in or out.)
|
As always, any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Best, Steve (steve@srwebster.com )
