The Rick Pierce Tournament was named in honor of a very special individual. In 1987 while driving home from playing in the NE Volleyball Regionals, a drunk driver struck Rick’s car. In a split second, we lost an amazing individual and friend. Each year we take the time to remember Rick – in particular, his warm smile, his sportsmanship, and love of the game.
Rick was a great competitor on the court, but players on both sides of the net truly liked and respected him. He embodied the meaning of sportsmanship – always playing hard, but with a smile on his face. Rick also dedicated many hours to promoting and advancing the sport he loved. Playing, coaching, organizing, and volunteering were just second nature for Rick.
So, in memory of Rick, our volleyball community selects one male and one female player who demonstrate a love of volleyball and good sportsmanship, and we honor them at this tournament.
This year's male and female recipients of the Rick Pierce Sportsmanship Award are:
Joe Federline and Angela Zachery
